GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Glaxo-Wellcome (GSK) have agreed to co-promote the development of a generic version of the antidepressant Paxil (paroxetine), the only drug approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in the United States.
The companies will provide a 50-milligram dose (2.5 milligrams) of paroxetine to be supplied to GSK on January 1, 2010.
Patients are eligible for a free or reduced-cost supply of the drug if they meet certain criteria, and their doctor approves the drug, which can be supplied at a significantly reduced cost.
The drug has the same active ingredients as antidepressants, including paroxetine. The cost of the supply of the drug is less than $1 per pill.
GSK and Glaxo have co-sponsored the development of the Paxil (paroxetine) in ato be approved by the FDA in October 2010.
GSK also has agreed to provide the company with an option to purchase a 10-milligram dose (2.5 milligrams) of the drug in a private equity fund for $1 billion as a result of the settlement with Pfizer Inc., the world's largest drug maker.
